The audiobook version does not allow me to add in the files for the sample patch lists and cue sheets so I have included them here:
Patchlist - Microsoft Works
Cue Sheet - Microsoft Works
Also not included in the audiobook is the glossary, so I have included that here as well:
Compressor/Limiter - a device or plug-in that compresses or limits the amount of audio signal that passes through it.
Imagine a garden hose that has water shooting out of the nozzle too quickly. You can adjust the water flow by adjusting the
nozzle. A compressor/limiter works in the same way. It can be used to make sure that the level of audio signal you are
recording or mixing does not hit a peak too high and distort the sound.
Condenser Microphone - a sensitive microphone which utilizes various and often switchable patterns to record high quality
audio. This microphone is typically used in studio recording applications as opposed to live band performances, and requires
an external source called phantom power.
Cue - a piece of music or sound that is created to be placed in a film, video or audio recording.
Demo Reel - A collection of material used to promote your skills in order to obtain projects.
Effects -
•Chorus - thickens the sound of an audio signal. I like tothink of it as typing a word in a word processing program and
then changing the text to bold.
•Delay - repeats the sound of an audio signal at a specifiedrate of speed. To give you an idea of what this sounds like,
say this out loud, "Hello there... there... there... there."
•Reverb - one of the most common effects used today. If youhave ever stood in a small room, you may have noticed the
sound of your voice did not seem to travel very far as it wouldhave if you stood in a large warehouse. Reverb adds depth to
the audio signal and can make it sound more alive. It can alsogive you the feel that the sound was recorded in various
locations, such as in a small room or in a wide open cavern.
Equalizer - a unit or plug-in used to effect the specifics of asound. To get an idea of how this works, many stereos and MP3
players are equipped with different song modes such as pop, rock, etc. When you listen to the differences of the overall sound
quality, you are actually hearing different equalizer settings. Equalization can be set for each individual sound or to a mix
ofsounds to make them more pleasing to the ear.
Panning - the art of placing a sound in an audio location such as more to the left ear than to the right or vice-versa. If
you stand infront of a drummer while they are playing, you will notice that the sound of the hi-hat is heard more to one side
in your head and theride cymbal is heard more in the other. In a studio, this placement is created by panning a sound from
one side to the other.
Rendering - When creating music on a computer through a virtual instrument, the sounds you are hearing are the MIDI notes
beingplayed through the instrument's interface. At some point, to be able to place this piece in the film or send a demo, you
will haveto convert the MIDI to an actual audio track. This process iscalled rendering.
Sequencer Template - this is anything that you set up and use repeatedly as a basic starting point for a project. For
example, if Ihave to compose a theme and create several musical variations of that theme, I will compose the first theme and
use that samesequencer setup as a basis for the variations. Though modifications may be needed as I compose the variations, I
havesaved the time of loading the same sounds and positioning overand over.
Sound Design - the creation of a new sound to match a on-screensituation. When a film is made, the microphone may not catch
every sound that you would expect to hear when you watch thefootage, or it may be too quiet to use and the sound will have to
be re-created. The role of a sound designer is to create thosesounds to complete the film.
Tempo Map - a sequence of various tempos strung together tomatch the music to the timing of the scene.
Voice-over - a voice recording made to be placed in a video orpiece of audio such as in a radio commercial.
